early gifts

**BIG project bag sale Wednesday November 5th at 10 a.m. pacific over on the shop blog. go over and check out the details now! :)

early gifts for myself of course! i decided it was time to use up at least one of my holiday themed str skeins. i would feel guilty if another christmas passed by and the yarn was still sitting in my stash. so i present an early gift to myself...

no purl monkeys
str lightweight - colorway grinchy
size 1 needles

appropriately shown here on my str sock blockers - a christmas gift from ellen last year.

i really love the no purl version of the monkey pattern, it flies by and is so easy to memorize. i'm sure there will be many more in my future!

i do have a favor to ask for those few left who still read my blog - i need camera help. i am finally going to break down and get a new one. i have one of the first canon elph cameras and it is dying. i'm thinking that the compact factor is no longer an issue. i mostly want something that is easy to use (did you know that i was a few classes shy of my design degree and i didn't finish it because i refused to take a 2nd photography class i hated it so much!?). i don't want all point and shoot, i like some manual adjustments. i also want something that takes really good close ups of small items (stitch markers!). I like that crisp focused close image and the blurred out background. i'm going to hit cnet and my local camera shop but if you have any ideas let me know - my budget is about $500.

ok, off for now, it's the day before halloween and i have few things i need to do. my pumpkins are all prepped and ready to carve and i need to make some popcorn balls (not for trick or treaters, don't worry - i'm not the crazy lady who hands out handmade treats to the kids - actually i don't get any trick or treaters where i live, ever).

one last thing, as i was googling a popcorn ball recipe my mind was somewhere else and i typed pumpkin balls in accidently. I came across this recipe. i doubt i'll try it but i found it very interesting!

There should be a few that meet your requirements you will just need to decide whether you will love a Canon or Nikon. I'm sure there are other perfectly good camera brands out there for an entry level Dslr, but these two will have the widest range of lenses when you want more later on. Try them out and see what feels right in your hands. I love my Canon, but others love their Nikons.

i'm not certain you can get a new Nikon DSLR for your camera budget. that's why i went with the canon digital rebel xti. and that their lens are superior. since you already have a canon you'll know all the settings/symbols already. and while i mostly do auto, you can set a manual focus. the macro setting is less than fabulous. if you're going to do lots of macro shots, i'd buy a macro lens for that, because the one that came with the kit, maybe an 18mm-50mm (or some variation of that) rarely functions the way i think a macro should.

i have no real recommendations on cameras--but i just made popcorn balls...so i will leave a recommendation on that :) i used one from all recipes and it's the "best ever popcorn balls" from allrecipes.com and i found they are better omitting the marshmallows. they are delicious.

Ooh, those monkeys are great looking! I'm gonna have to try to no purl monkeys for my next pair of socks.

I use a Sony point and shoot, but with the macro function on it, I'm pretty satisfied with the close up shots. Hope your search for a new camera comes up well.

I'm off to prepare for Halloween too. I still have to find a pattern for my pumpkins!

I have heard good things about the new Nikon Coolpix. You can edit the pictures right on the camera screen. Kind of like the same movements as the iPhone. Worth a look.

Those socks are so good looking! I might have to cast on a pair using STR. Have a good Halloween.

I have a older Canon Digital Rebel and I really like it. I also got a nice macro lens for it a while ago for pictures of jewelry. Really worth it if you are going to be taking pics of tiny things.

I like the fact that all the lenses on the Canons are interchangeable, so I can still use them if I upgrade to a better and newer Canon someday.

I would really like to get a digital SLR and when I do it'll probably be a Canon Rebel. In the meantime, I've got a Canon powershot sd850 IS. It's got a variety of settings including macro for close-ups. I can get pretty close and sharp if the lighting is good. It also takes surprisingly good quality video, which I never thought I'd use but I have. I've used it for stitchmarker pics:http://www.flickr.com/photos/weathertopfarm/2986882935/

I had a smaller Nikon and I loved it. While there is a point and shoot option, it had nice macro and some good generic settings, as well as the ability to customize. The megapixels were there too, which I feel like has a big influence on the clarity, esp with closeups.

I know a lot of people are advocating for the Rebel, and while I don't have anything against it, using a SLR has so much to do with the lens, and those get pricey mighty fast.

For some reason the feed hasn't been working for your blog so I'm a bit behind on reading it. Wow! I love these socks. I made the monkey socks from the original pattern but that sounds interesting to try it without purls. Your monkey socks turned out great. You matched the stripes really well and the colors are great!
