pet food question
ok, totally random, but just curious if any of you have found brands that have no imported ingredients in them? cat food specifically. the recall seems to be following me, every brand i switch to is somehow involved in the recall (thankfully not the specific "flavor" of food i was feeding). the latest being natural balance. and then i found out that the wellness brand wet food i was buying - because it was so natural - is made by menu foods. i refuse to support them. so i bought wellness dry food (not made by menu foods) and some brand of wet food that actually owns there own cannery. of course that doesn't mean all the ingredients are from the states. i googled it but no luck. which worries me. if you were a pet food company who's ingredients were all from the US wouldn't you be marketing yourself big time right now??

A good way to find out is to email someone at Goober Pet Direct. They are AWESOME and will answer any question you have. I am totally pissed about Wellness wet because we just switched all the cats at the shelter over to Wellness which as you know is NOT cheap!
I'm having the same problem. I kept feeding my kitties wet food that the company assured me was not included, and then they added it on April 10th and recalled it tot---after I fed it to them for all of this extra time!! I am livid and heartbroken, and now don't know what to do. I have switched to Purina Pro Plan and Friskies for the moment, and just keep my fingers crossed that they don't include them later.
I've seen things before about what foods to cook for your pets and how to prep food for them. I used to think that was over the top, but now it doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

hello, i'm a long time lurker on your site. i too am having problems trusting the pet food industry. i switched my 4 kitties to newman's organic after the wheat gluten stuff even though their Hill's Prescription didn't have the wheat. i emailed newman's yesterday after the rice stuff broke. they emailed me back:
"Newman’s Own Organics pet foods are NOT part of the mass recall by Menu Foods or the extended recall. We DO NOT use wheat gluten or rice protein
concentrate in any of our pet products. All our pet foods are made in the
US and certified organic by Oregon Tilth, a USDA accredited certifying
agency.

so for now i'm sticking with them. the cats have had slight diarrhea what with the abrupt change but i'll take that over potential bad ingredients. they love it too btw!

Have you tried Merrick natural pet food? My dog eats Merrick wet food, and it's NOT part of the recall. For dry food, she eats Great Life for dogs (they also have cat food), which isn't part of the recall, either.
I would't recommend Wellness, anyway. They changed their recipe a while ago to add more filler, etc. The natural pet food store where we get our dog's food no longer carries it b/c of this.
I feed my dogs Wysong. They've been eating it for more than 5 years, enjoy it and are healthy. http://www.wysong.net/
They also make other pet foods including food for cats. As of now none of their food has been recalled. They have an article on their web site about it.
Good Luck

I use Innova for both my dog and cat. That brand hasn't been involved in the recall.
I've fed my dog the food from Solid Gold since he was a puppy. Very healthy ingredients, few additives and full disclosure on where the ingredients are sourced:

Canidae! My dog looooves it, and it is made local (to me). and they make cat food. Check it out, little vito never gets bored, like he did with other foods. Human grade meats...
We're on Friskies right now with my cats, so far, so good.
there are at least 2 dozen sites on the internet with pet food recipes. I know cuz I looked. I buy IAMs dry food and still do. But, I made a wet food of Chicken(slightly freezer burned) rice (handfull) and carrots. Threw in a little salt and some chicken stock boiled it up and then put it threw the food processor. It was the consistancy of mashed potatoes and I put it in Ice cube trays to freeze. Then into a plastic bag after frozen. 2 -30 sec in the microwave on a paper plate and they thought they were special. It lasted nearly a month.
Next I'm going to try chicken livers.

I have often used Bright life cat food (dry food)(http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/) for Wasabi. She loves it, just looked at their website and it's safe. I have bought it down at Mud Bay. They are really great about giving you a sample pouch of it to try too. As for canned - keep trying. They are good about just giving you a can of food to try. They sent me home the first time with 5 different cans of food and a small bag of the Bright life.
I was using Wellness but because I too refuse to support Menu, I switched to Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's wet food. I may try the Newman's Own Organic, that seems like a good brand. I also feed a litle of the Solid Gold dry food (the lamb version, I think)

we feed our dogs a raw food diet we prepare ourselves out of HUMAN grade ingredients. they have never been healthier :)
the cat doesn't appreciate our efforts, so he gets Innova cat food, which is totally grain free. just fruits, veggies and meat. it's wonderful and he LOVES it. they sell it at this really cool pet store in downtown edmonds. it's on main street. you should check it out!!
here's a link to the company that makes innova.

Natura Pet also makes California Natural which my dog eats.
Seems the dry food is made at their own plant, but they use Menu for canning (although it is at a non-effected plant). They have pledged to get their own canning plant.

Totally stressing here! Our dog eats a little Wellness brand wet every day, but I couldn't find any info on the web about that brand being a problem. Do you know where I should be looking? I tried the FDA's site, but that didn't help.
I feed my cats Innova, and they seem to like it. It isn't cheap, but it isn't any more expensive than Wellness. I've also feed them Californial Natural, which they REALLY liked, but doesn't come in big bags.
