pain in my
i am itching to knit. but i have put myself on a 3 day knitting ban (you know this won't last, i have no willpower). my hand, elbow and shoulder are giving me a lot of trouble. i am taking advil every 6-8 hours and wearing one of those wrist brace thingys. i hope i can recover quickly. i would just be heartbroken if this was some sort of permanent problem. i can't even make stitch markers it hurts too much (ok, so it even hurts to brush my teeth). i should have stopped knitting a few days ago but couldn''t resist. i have some great projects going and did not want to stop! of course when your hand falls asleep after 1 minute of knitting you know it is time to take it easy.
so i am reading blogs and looking at patterns etc to keep occupied. i even attempted to make a list of everything i knit in 2006. i didn't do too bad. i know i probably missed a few things here and there, but i came up with the following
9 pairs of socks
7 assorted handbags
7 scarves
7 hats
6 dishcloths
1 baby sweater
2 wristbands for charity
2 felted snowmen
1 pair of felted clogs
1 ipod cozy
2 felted bowls
1 headband
1 pair of wrist warmers
i was excited to see so many socks. i heart socks. i wish i was knitting socks right now. ok, off to read some more blogs.

Oh, I am so sorry. I have Carpal Tunnel in both wrists so I can TOTALLY empathize. Once you get things (the pain) under control....make sure that you wear the braces every night regardless of whether or not they hurt. . . . it helps
Looks like you knit quite a bit this year - definitely respectable numbers! Hope your hands feel better soon so you can get started on 07 knitting.
Advil - good. Plain old Ibuprofen - good - can take up to 800 mg. 3-4 times per day not to exceed 3.2 g. daily (quoting from the Drug Handbook). Take with food - sometimes bothers stomachs. Ice on areas that hurt -good for inflammation. Make up slush bags - alcohol and water - freeze them but they turn slushy and not solid due to the alcohol. Braces on wrists at night - good. Heal quickly. I want some snowman stitch markers!
Hope you get better real fast. Sometimes I'll be knitting or spinning and think "what would I do if I couldn't do this anymore"??? Well maybe go back to weaving...
Hope you feel better soon! It sucks to not be able to knit. Happy New Year to you!
I hope you are feeling better. Could you e-mail me, I have a question about the scarves you were making at VY&T the other day. thanks

I can soooo commiserate with you! I think I've had terrible neck and shoulder pain for the last couple of days. I even took a baby aspirin, just in case I was having a heart attack! Actually, I was pretty certain I over did it knitting. Knitting with circular needles seems to make me tense - result - a pain in the neck. I had to stop too, and it's getting better already.
Wow! Your were exceedingly productive!
Is there a favorite project of them all? Something that surprised or delighted you?
when you get your hand back, you should celebrate by knitting something for charity! no better way to love others while loving your newly-working hand!
check out www.warmwithlove.com for some great charity references! (shameless, shameless plug!!!)
May I suggest some deep tissue massage. I'm a massage therapist and a fellow knitter/crocheter. I have this problem at times as well. Sometimes local massage schools offer free or low cost treatments. Try it out. Might help . Make sure you drink lot's of water too!
Hope your arm gets to healing. I love reading your blog by the way. YOu make great stuff!
Happy New Year!
Amanda
I hope your healed up and knitting again soon - that's an impressive list!
I hope your hand heals soon! Not knitting is torture.
Be good and get better soon! You have knit a ton in 06! Wow! Tell us what you're looking at doing in 07- I need ideas.
I went to physical therapy a few years ago for typing/crafting issues, and the best advice they gave me was exercise. The muscles in your hand and arm aren't used to all that work, so you have to build them up. I use (not as much as I should) Theraputty and do squeezing exercises to build up my finger and arm muscles. It really helps. I've also noticed that lifting weights helps, too. Those pains are so terrible (I have some right now myself) - take care!
Feel better! And then get knittin'! :)
That's a whole lot of knitting, well done! Any plans for 2007 knitting?
I hope you feel better soon!
I'm sorry to hear about your arm problems -- you make such beautiful things! Lots of people seem to have good suggestions to help your injury, and I thought I'd add that I've found Alexander Technique to be really effective in dealing with my own arm and shoulder problems. It helps you to move more freely and carry out daily activities (including knitting) with less tension. Anyway, I really hope you feel better soon.
Write anything else author. Very interesting.
I hope you've had some relief of your symptoms. Not that you're looking for more therapeutic advice or anything...but I was an occupational therapist and worked in hand therapy before I retired to raise our children.
--ibuprofen, good.
--contrast baths, helpful.
--upper body massage-great.
--stretches-after massage & periodically during knitting.
--DO NOT do strengthening exercises if you're symptomatic.
--Keep in mind if you rely on icing, it decreases good circulation which is absotlutely neccessary for healing.
--Rest: along with good circulation this is necessary to allow your body to heal all the micro trauma to your tissues you create throughout the day.
--Since circulation is an absolute necessity, cut back on caffeine, drink lots of hydrating fluids, take brisk walks (or other activities you may enjoy that get your blood pumping again). Good luck. I've enjoyed your blog.
