making friends

wow, thanks for all the wonderful comments on my last post. it was kind of nice to hear that i wasn't alone in my feelings. one of the things i neglected to mention, was how much i love knitting for reasons other than the actual process of knitting. making friends. i love knitting because i have made some wonderful friends. many of whom i haven't met in person, but others that i have. today in particular, marks the one year anniversary of my first meeting with tami and her friend alyson (now my friend too!). on a whim i posted about a local yarn sale and asked if anyone wanted to meet there and have lunch after. that day, my friend denise and i found 2 new and wonderful friends. we started with a common interest and turned it into something more. i look forward to spending more time with them, i can't say enough about how well we just clicked! if it wasn't for knitting, i wouldn't know them. another reason to love knitting!

and for all my virtual friends, well, i never would have thought that you could develop any type of friendship over the internet, but am happy to discover that you can. and i can't forget my quirky little knitting group, lfp knits. founded by megan, go read her blog, she is so funny. i think we must have hit a year by now too? anyways, i am not terribly sappy, but i am a girl who loves her friends so a big hug to all of you.

other things on my mind lately...

yep, paris in the fall. and what is being dubbed my paris scarf (although it is close to being frogged). this is backyard leaves from scarf style in baby alpaca grande by plymouth yarn. i love it, but i don't think i have enough yarn. we'll see. i am so inspired by this leafy scarf (1/2 way down the page or so) on the craftoholic blog. but no pattern to be found, so i was looking for something with a similar chunky feel.

i also have the rib and cable socks from interweave on the needles, i have actually turned the heel, but here is a shot from a few days ago

i hope to have the first one done this weekend. i am not super in love with these, so i am worried that some socks that rock might hop on my needles before the second sock.

have a great weekend everybody. thanks to everyone who reads my little blog. i can tell from my stats (what you think i don't look at my stats??) that there are more of you than the comments let on and i just want to thank you for reading. and stay tuned, because i am coming up on my second blogiversary! although i won't be sending out 40 packages again, there will be a contest of some sort and 1 or 2 fabulous prizes!!

Blog friends, they ARE real, even if no one else understands. I am blessed to count you as one, Amy!

You're not crazy about the socks??? I LOVE them! Beautiful colors and the pattern is "just enough."

I love the colors of those rib and cable socks.

I know exactly what you mean about making friends through the internet and knitting. I find myself talking about them to my face-to-face friends all the time!

Tis true! I've met so many people online that I consider true friends. Seriously. It's weird but it works. LOVE the WIPs. What yarn are you using for the socks?

Ooo, rubbing my hands together in anticipation for the 2 year blogiversary!!!

Got your comments on the blogaroo....I so agree about the Shopaholic books. They make me nauseous because they are so predictable but I can't stop reading them. Can we spell A-D-D-I-C-T-I-O-N?
I LOVE the Jennifer Weiner books...did you read those? LOVE. And another you should read...Conversations with a Fat Girl my Liza Palmer. FANtastic!

Have a super duper weekend! Oh and can I request Atom or RSS for your blog...I need to put you on my Sage for Firefox for your updates! :)

Just a hint for your trip. Include your own washcloth, bar of soap and stash a roll of TP in your luggage. Your knitting is just beautiful.

I probably spend as much time thinking about knitting, talking about knitting, blogging about knitting, and reading about knitting as I actually do knitting. It's why it takes up all my crafting at the expense of other hobbies I used to love. But I agree that the best part is meeting people, real people, who share a common interest.

Lovely sock.

Hey GTBG - I love your site and completely agree - knitting is so great! Not just b/c you end up with great stuff to wear and gift, but b/c of the friends you can find through it.

I probably don't comment as often as I should, so I'm delurking today. I love your sense of style, both in your FOs and your home.

I'm addicted to interior design, so seeing how other people decorate their homes is very interesting to me. My house isn't "finished", but perhaps I'll share some photos soon of the parts I like the best, in case there is someone else out there like me!

Have a great weekend and Happy Knitting!

Hi GTBG:

Your last two posts have inspired me to 'delurk', as well. I've been reading your blog for the past year and just love all of your crafty endeavors, both knitting and non. As a full-time working mom of an 18 month old, I don't have nearly the time I'd like to knit - so I live vicariously through you and thought you should know it! (o:

Also inspired by your latest posts - I am going to work on finding the time to put together and maintain a blog. Who wouldn't like another friend, especially one who can knit?

Lovely thoughts on friendship in your post. I feel like I would click with quite a few of my blogging pals but being "over the pond" kind of inhibits meeting in person.
The chunky blue scarf on Craftoholic's page looks like it's knit in the same lace pattern that I am currently knitting a sweater in. I can send you the stitch pattern if you like. It's just 2 x 11 stitch and eight row pattern.

Lovely socks - I just finished a pair myself and was happy with the outcome, but I don't think I'll knit them again. Nice thoughts on friends and blog friends - I totally get it and I'm in agreement - Have a great weekend!

Wow, your leaf scarf is gorgeous. I would love the pattern. Tried to find it too but had no luck. If you wouldnt mind sharing, I would be so appreciative.

Take care!

I love the leaf scarf. I think I am going to have to break down and buy that book as I have been seeing that scarf on a lot of blogs and I love it! Btw, yours is definitely the best blog. I love it - you are super inspiring! Happy knitting this weekend.

amy- you're so sweet! I'm glad we all met last year. It's an odd thing to read someone's blog and get a "sense" of them and then meet in person. You were just as lovely as I thought you would be! See you tomorrow...

I couldn't find an email address for you so I'm leaving the "pattern" here.
Stitch pattern as written in my sweater pattern (assuming there are 2 selvedge stitches on each side:
Abbreviations:
sk2togpo: slip 1, knit 2 tog, pass slipped st over.
yon: yarn over needle
yf: yarn forward

1st row: p2, *yon, k3, sk2togpo, k3, yon, p2: rep from * to end.
2nd and all even rows: k2, *p9, k2. Rep from * to end
3rd row: p2, *k1, yf, k2, sk2togpo, k2, yf, k1, p2: rep from * to end.
5th row: p2, *k2, yf, k1, sk2togpo, k1, yf, k2, p2: rep from * to end.
7th row: p2, *k3, yf, sk2togpo, yf, k3, p2: rep from * to end.

I think the scarf you saw had 2 pattern repeats. There may have been more stitches in the pattern but it's easy to add more. Instead of having 3 knitted stitches either side of the sk2togpo, make it 4 or 5 and adjust the rows accordingly. Once you start knitting the pattern you'll see what I mean.

Did you say 40 packages?! That blows my mind. Seriously. I think your paris in the fall scarf has to be perfect so keep at it. I know you will have something fabulous when you are done!

So does this mean it's official? You are going to Paris? I sure hope so- what a fabulous experience. And you know, if you keep up with the Backyard leaves, you do knit to the middle and then start the other side, and just end when one of your balls is done....

Oh, I'm so glad we met too, Amy! See, not everyone on the Internet is a big weirdo. I have no idea how long it's been since we met at the very first LFP knits meeting, but it's probably been a year. I have a vague feeling that you were working on Lady Eleanor, and I was working on the Dolman Updated sweater for the first time! Good times. See you tomorrow - can't wait to hear about your big travel plans!

sending you good yarn vibes that you'll have enough yarn for the scarf. nothing more irritating than that.

You do realize that I'm insane with jealously that you are going to Paris...and at the same time I'm excited for you. What an amazing experience! Do you think I could stow away in your checked luggage?? :)
