hobby-->habit-->obsession

aha! you thought i was talking about knitting didn't you? well sadly, that isn't my only obsession. my latest obsession? chocolate. hot chocolate that is. it actually started awhile back, the movie chocolat and an episode of martha with rick bayless were my downfall. not to mention that fact that coffee and tea make me ill (in essence caffeine - although oddly, the caffeine in chocolate does not have the same effect). so of course i have hot chocolate for my warm beverage of choice. and i have tried all kinds of hot chocolate. the funny thing is, nothing makes a good pot of hot chocolate like the traditional powdered cocoa (good quality, dutch process), milk and sugar. oh, there are decent runner-ups like my williams-sonoma can made from guittards chocolate (the same chocolate i use in my choco chip cookies). and the mariebelle aztec hot chocolate. but be careful, some of that hot chocolate that costs over $20 a tin can be nasty. i actually threw away some french hot chocolate that was terribly expensive. another expensive aspect of hot chocolate is the pots. while i was content with just one, my traditional french white porcelain, i couldn't resist another williams-sonoma sale item. the le creuset hot chocolate pot. oh dear me. here it is tucked in amongst my hot chocolate paraphernalia.

i so did not need to spend the money on that thing. when you can't walk away? that is when i call it an obsession.

speaking of obsession, just an fyi, they are re-airing last sunday's grey's. watch it if you didn't manage to catch it the first go around.

i am working on my lace socks, and although i am doing ok - i ran into some trouble on the heel, working toe up, you do this wrap stitch technique. i got that. but then when you have to knit (and purl) the wrap with it's stitch through the back loop all hell breaks loose and the seam looks very holey. i know my technique is off, so i gotta try it a couple more times. it may require a trip to the lys for a quick tutorial.

p.s. lorna's is a beyotch to rib back.

tomorrow, i promise the "crap yarn finds it's calling" post.

oooh, I love hot chocolate, too. I like a semi-sweet. I'm weird, though, in that I hate cow's milk, so I drink mine iwth soy milk. Do you make yours on the stove?

Oooh, chocolat....Johnny Depp....

and, I have to know, are the gourmet marshmallows worth it? They always looks so yummy, but the price stops me.

The best hot chocolate I've ever had... Stephen's Gourmet hot chocolate (also a powdered mix). I haven't priced it lately in regular stores, but at Sam's Club where I buy it, it's around $8 or $9 for a HUGE container. If you can find some, it would definitely be worth it to give it a try (besides the regular chocolate flavor, they also have very good mint and raspberry flavors, but I wasn't at all impressed by their french vanilla... which must be white chocolate based).

Regarding caffeine... the reason why the caffeine in chocolate doesn't bother you when coffee and tea do is because the level of it is so low as to almost be non-existant.

I'm an admitted chocoholic. I could almost live off of chocolate milk and hot chocolate alone. Still, I've had a couple of experiences with real caffeine sources, and the effect... well, it sure makes for funny stories after the fact.

Chocolat will do it to you! And if you're feeling your obsession slipping, try Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After reading your post, I too am craving some hot chocolate! It's going to be freezing here this weekend so cozying up on the couch with knitting and chocolatey goodness sounds perfect. Do you have a favorite hot chocolate recipe?

Yummy! I love hot chocolate. Especially with marshmallows... even better: homemade marshmallows. mmmmmmmmmm...

And I watched Grey's Anatomy again last night even after seeing it on Sunday! It was such a good episode! It was worth a repeat watch!

Amy - After you pick up & knit the wrapped stitches on your heel, wrap the next stitch, then turn and work your way back. Do the same on the other side. When you come back to the stitch that has 2 wraps, pick up both & knit with the stitch (3 together). This will solve the hole problem. That solved the problem for me. Bon Chance!!!

I don't think your chocolate accessories collection is overkill, because they all have other potential uses. I have one of those tall ceramic South American hot chocolate pots with a special chocolate mixer tool. Now THAT is a one-trick pony.

Oh wait, now that I got a closer look at your collection, I see that you have something similar to my "el loco coco" pot... OK, what the hell, hot chocolate is worth some dedicated devices! :)

Boy, I do love some homemade hot chocolate. I didn't even know there were special accoutrements for serving it, though (a hot chocolate pot?) I use "Double Dutch" cocoa from King Arthur, some sugar, a pinch of salt, and some vanilla in mine. Along with the milk. I have got to try the marshmallows, now that you and Lynda have both inspired me!
