catchy couture

you know how i love the handbags. but these days, my handbag budget is almost nothing. with the condo and all, i can't rationalize/justify the spendy bags like i used to (damn it!). over the last several months i have run across bags, like the one below, on many knitting blogs

a designer bag that i can actually knock off? yeah! the bag above was my first attempt, i plan to do a couple more (i got this one done in a few hours). if you go over to craftster.org there is a long trail of info on these things. i used some leftover wool-ease (chunky) from a bad sweater experience. i just have to figure out how to line them so that keys etc. don't poke out.

and i finally made a decision on the swift. the wood one stays. i tried both out and the plastic/metal one seems to catch a lot more than the wood one. here it is pictured with my lovely, newly wound ball of fleece artist sock yarn in the colorway rain.

my one new year's resolution was to learn to knit socks on two circulars and two at once. i am going to pop over to the yarn shop today that is just a block away (i love that!) for some needles. it looks pretty simple. i need to learn this technique because i hate the ladders from dpns and i definately am prone to the second sock syndrome.

decorating of the condo is coming along slowly now. i still have some key pieces of furniture to buy (and i need the ones i purchased months ago to actually arrive!!). i did however, finally buy some original art for my place. i discovered this portland, oregon artist amy ruppel a few months back (from the kate spade site). her work is really cool and the colors are perfect for my condo. they are small pieces (just 5"x5" each). i hope to get a couple more to add to my collection. i feel like an adult with real artwork!

pretty soon, this lovely piece will be below my owls in the entryway. it is pretty funky, but i love it!

tonight it will be a trip to pottery barn to check out a few things. with the holiday decorations down, i need to get some more stuff to fill this place!

Oh my gosh, I love that purse! It is absolutely awesome. I really like those cute little owls too. I know what you mean about "feeling like an adult" now that you have artwork. I just moved into my apartment (though I've lived away from home before) and this time I feel much more like an adult than I did before.

Lucky you, with a yarn store so close. Actually, I have one two blocks from my house, but it is tricoter, and the women are rude, so I never go.

But, I've done the 2 socks on 2 circs, and it does feel like you don't make a lot of process. I had problems knitting with the wrong needle, so it would get all tangled and confused. I ended up painting the circular portion of one needle with a bit of nail polish on each end. That way you always know what needle to knit with. Just a tip.

I think the purse is super cute! How beautiful is that fleece artist yarn too. I'm a big fan of the wooden swift too.

Love the Fleece Artist!!! Did you find that online or was that at Village Yarn and Tea?

If you need ANY help with the 2 on 2, let me know. I've got it down to a fine art. And I actually feel like things move faster, myself. It's really great when you have both the heels done!! ;) I just finished another pair that way and I will NEVER go back!

Oh, I always love the things you make! Very cool handbag!

By the way, could you please let me know where you ordered the Ami Ami yarn from (for the Interweave hat)...I can't seem to find it anywhere!

Thanks!

Ahhh, post condo budgets. We bought our first condo in San Diego right after getting married 5 years ago and it was slim pickings for a while. Totally worth it, but it still had us biting our knuckles in frustration for about a year.

Love the purse!!! It looks great and what a great way to use up the extra yarn. Where did you get the handles from?

I've been loving those cable bags! I've seen "designer" versions from www.margaretnicole.com. They are super expensive!

I love the bag!! Seeing that reminded me that I bought some similar handles a few months ago - my New Year's resolution is to finish things that I started, so maybe I'll have to churn out a bag of my own.

I adore that bag! And the artwork is really sweet too. We've been married for almost 6 years and we've yet to get any art at all!

Your Noro scarf is perfect. The blending of the yarns worked perfectly.

I love the style of your new artwork. The colors are some of my favorites. And the piece that you will put under them is so much fun.

I'm a huge fan of encaustic paintings...Amy Ruppel has a nice style. I have a friend who works in wax...we have two of her pieces....just gorgeous how matted and deep the tones are through the wax thickness. The owls are great choices for your collection.
