cursed.

sigh. the sweater curse has hit me again. that is right, i have secretly been working on another sweater. and you know what? it didn't turn out either. the sleeves are enormous. it is INSANE. what is wrong with me? i have been knitting for a year and a half. i should be able to put a simple sweater together. and i mean simple. stupid pattern. that's it. i am blaming it on the pattern. dang knit.1. i hate you. and all your ugly, weird lion brand crapness. seriously. what was i thinking?

it is really beginning to bug me that i can't be successful at a sweater. and it seems to be the sleeves that are a curse. hmm. good thing i used really cheap yarn again so as to not waste my money. the next sweater i make will cost loads of money. that way maybe i will break the curse. and i won't use green yarn. green yarn is part of the curse too.

(insert scream here) i am tightly wound these days (the sweater situation is not helping). my job will most likely be ending by this time next month. i have no future prospects. and in june, well in june i turn 30. there is a very real chance that on my 30th birthday i could be jobless, homeless and boyfriendless. hah! take that bridget jones!! :) now, i am not soliciting for kind words here. this situation is in my control (except the turning 30 bit). i am just choosing not to do anything about it. i am waiting (as procrastinators do) to hit that wall of "oh crap!" and start acting on it because i am completely afraid. for my sake, i hope that day comes soon! i would like to turn 30 with things slightly more settled and maybe a new sweater. ;)

p.s. if you have any good EASY patterns for a "first" sweater will you let me know? i was thinking the sweater from last minute knitted gifts, but have no idea what to classify as east these days. drop me an email at:

Check out Sally Melville's Knit Stitch book - if you have a coupon you can pick it up in Michaels for half off. She has a Neck down Jumper that is super easy and the sleeves tend to run smallis than usual. Or you can just make Klaralund - four rectangles.

I am sleeve challenged too! My best results come from seamless raglans. If you work it from the bottom-up, you get to try the sleeve on before joining it to the sweater. With top-down, you knit the sleeves last and you can try the sweater on while you work. If you have Denise needles, it's even easier. Just add an extender until it's big enough to try on. This is really the only way I have been able to knit a sweater that fits me. Glampyre has a top down recipe and I'm pretty sure there's a bottom up pattern on Knitty somewhere. Hope this helps!

A friend just made the LMKG sweater and it really was a breeze. She showed me it at every step and its a lot of mindless knitting since its knit in the round but it is VERY easy to knit despite a few quirks in the pattern. You can also use any one of a number of different yarns for it so I say give it a try!

My first (and only completed) sweater was the Big Sack sweater from Stitch n' Bitch. Even though I screwed up the cable, and even though the sleeves ended up different lengths, and even though I made it in a weird brown color, and even though I used the totally wrong yarn, I get compliments when I wear it. That's got to say something. :)

Since summer is coming up, why don't you make something sleeveless? It will be cheaper, cause you can buy less yarn, and quicker, cause NO sleeves! And, if it turns out horrible, at least you didn't spend all that time knitting the sleeves.

Knitting Pure & Simple top down sweaters - first sweater I ever knit and keep coming back to them. If it worked for me, it will work for you!

I also like the Knitting Pure & Simple patterns. My second sweater was their roll-neck version and it was great. I'll caution you on the v-neck, though...the pattern had a major flaw and armholes were WAY too high. Luckily someone else was using the same pattern at the same time and I was able to make corrections to lower the armnole before it was too late. Another option is to knit the sleeves FIRST to get gauge...so if you have to rip, it's a much smaller amount of knitting!

Try Stefanie's top down raglan or Rosedale. I have seen many great version of the raglan on the web, and I have made Rosedale. Both are FREEEE!

I second the Sally Melville advice. I made the two-toned sweater out of her Purl Stitch book as my first sweater. The sweater went together great and I didn't have any size problems. It doesn't look as good as it should on due to knitter error. I decided to add two inches to the bottom and forgot to add those two stitches in when planning to start the second color (hence two toned) at the top. Ooops! It's a good looking sweater, only I'm a little large on top and where the stripe hits is not flattering at all...

There's a really simple Rowan pattern. I've made about three or four of these sweaters and trust me, they're easy. It's in the #32 Rowan Magazine. In fact, it's the sweater on the front. Very basic, but it looks really good!

I am not sure what your situation is with the sleeves, but I was always taught to knit both sleeves on the needle at the same time; that way they both come out the exact same! It has worked for me every time I have used this method. It also eliminates the headache of having to knit the second sleeve after you are done with the first. Kind of like not wanting to knit the second sock! lol Purly Whites also has a good idea about maybe doing a summer sweater without any sleeves. Good luck with everything in your life! We are rooting for you!

The LMKG sweater has a Knitalong. I just joined, although I haven't started the sweater yet. My first sweater was Rosedale II from knitty (the pullover version of the cardigan listed above). It's a fairly straightforward sweater, and the stripes of the Kureyon keep you from getting too bored.
