why white won't felt

i don't know the answer to that. i sure did experience it though. i finished up my french market bag this evening with high hopes. i had been wanting to make this bag forever. i picked a great color combination (although i can't tell you how many times i heard people say "white is going to get dirty"). so for your viewing pleasure here is the before shot

i rather think it looks nice. now take a look at the after shot. sure you'll say, "not bad" and i would agree, but it isn't what i was expecting. it felted all crazy. the green is really thick and so felted you can't see a single stitch, where the white is still barely felted and you can see all stitches. i am tempted to throw it back in the wash. and to answer your question, yes they were the same yarn :) cascade 220, which i have felted successfully before.

a picture of chase the kitty, this makes me smile and not stress so much about that darn bag!

I can't say I'm an expert on felting but I say try it again on super hot! Maybe the white just needs to be agitated more than the green.

I think I read or heard somewhere that white wool doesn't felt very well because of the bleaching process they put it through to get it white. Don't quote me on that! I say try it again, it really can't hurt anything. It's a cute bag even if it doesn't end up felting like the green!

Ohhhhh NOoooo! I wish I had been able to warn you! I can't recall the technical terms, but it has to do with the processing of the wool to make it white- chemicals or whatever. It inhibits greatly (as shown in your excellent example) it's ability to felt. This also holds true for some very pale colours that have had the same kind of violent processing treatments.
Must be very disappointing for you- I'm trying to think of some way that you can salvage it- perhaps you can cut out the base and turn it into something?

I tried posting a comment yesterday but apparently it didn't work, so I'll try again.

I think I remember hearing or reading somewhere that white wool doesn't tend to felt well because of the bleaching process it's gone through to make it white. It sort of kills the fiber's ability to felt. But you know, I say try felting it again in really hot water and aggitate the hell out of it. It's worth a shot right?

hey all you are my first posters!! thanks so much! i feel validated now :)

anyways, thanks for your feedback, i had a sneaking suspicion that it may have to do with the color process. and i noticed when knitting that the white yarn seemed slightly less substantial than the green.

no worries, i will try washing it one more time (it looks like it is on the verge of felting a little bit more). i did block it and am happy with the shape. the problem is that it doesn't stand alone, it just flops over.

thanks again for the comments! i did notice that blogger is a little slow to post them, so sorry if you didn't see it show up right away. wonder why that is....

Orrrr. This might be too scary. Could you dye the bag and then retry felting it? Too left field? Nicole. www.craftapalooza.com
